When you hear the word “Leadership”, what is the first thing that comes into your mind? It could be your boss or management in your company. It could be your coach. It could be your team captain. It could be your president and prime minister. Here is my opinion, they just title that they held. It does not mean they have the noble leadership attribute.

My late father taught me the 5 V’s of Leadership Attributes. There are Visible, Vocal, Value, Virtue and Vocation. Take some to read it. The toughest attribute to hold is the vocation. Vocation is defined as the undying commitment to serve. Leaders suppose to serve his or her people and lead them in the right direction. Before we lead people, ask yourself these question. Are you able to lead yourself? Are you a leader in your own life? Are you in control?  Once you are able to lead your life to greatness. Then, only you earn the right to lead people to greatness. Think about it.

These are my 3 top quotes on leadership from Gary Vaynerchuk, Simon Sinek and Robin Sharma. There is one BONUS quote at the end by Simon Sinek.  Feel free to share this post.

Are you a leader of your life?

Are you ready to lead people to greatness?

They are two types of people running the race. They are people who focus on the obstacles. They are people who focus on the finish line. Which one are you? The statement also similar when we live life.

big-jump

They are two types of people in life. They are people who focus on the adversity. They are people who focus on the goal. Which one are you?

Let’s be practical. Setting goals seem easy. You write the plan of your goal nicely on a piece of paper or in your goal book.  After that, you leave it aside. Over a period of time, you tend to forget about it.  Here is the hard truth, the plan will not be materialized without execution.  Execution can be the main struggle. It is about getting things done and it takes the enormous amount of patience. The goal is to reach the finish line! Here are the 5 simple ways to focus on your finish line.

Make your goal VISIBLE

Our mind works well visually. What you can do is to make GOAL VISUAL BOARD and put your board in your room. It can be in a form of a whiteboard, chalkboard and pinboard. You can write your goal on your board.  You can stick pictures on it. You can do whatever you want on the board and put a deadline on your board. It must be very clear. Remember, clarity is power. You put Every day you wake up you will look at your GOAL VISUAL BOARD. You can look at it again at night and audit yourself.

Break down your goal into a LIST

You cannot swallow your whole meal in one go. You have to take one bite at a time and you can enjoy your meal. It is the same strategy when you are trying to achieve your goal. A massive goal is very overwhelming. It will cause you to lose confidence and motivation. The smart thing to do is to break down your massive goal into the actionable list. It has to be a specific and achievable task which you can do daily. It must practical and doable.  For each task completed, you will feel a confidence boost as you realise that you are one step closer to your goal. This makes reaching your ultimate goal that much easier.

For each task being checked, you will feel confidence boost as you realise that you are one step closer to your goal. Similar when you enjoy your meal one bite at a time, you can enjoy the process and the hustle to achieve your goal. That is how you can maintain your momentum and fire!

Action List

SHARE your goal with your friends or family

If your goal it not personal in nature, it is good to share with your friend and family. He or she will make you accountable. I am sure they are the ones you value to most. When they know your goal, they will have the expectation for you to achieve it. They will encourage you when you hit a wall. They will celebrate your success which will motivate you even more. Hence, this will help you to focus on your goal.

Use positive WORD

There is a saying; “Words are Sharper than the two-edged sword” This is unbelievably true. What do you say about yourself will program your well-being in our mind and our soul.  When you say “I CAN”, it opens the door of possibility.  When you say ” I CAN’T”, it close the door of possibility.  Use positive word to describe your goal. By doing so, it programs your mind that it is achievable. It does not have to be some sophisticated sentence. Make it simple, yet impactful such as;

 I CAN, I WILL, I MUST

Positive word

AUDIT yourself

“Review your goals twice every day in order to be focused on achieving them.” by Les Brown

In other words, audit yourself. It is a very important step in your goal hunting journey.  It requires an enormous amount of self-awareness and brutally honest with yourself.  It will help you adjust your journey if you sidetrack from your destination. It will help you to keep track of whether you are closer to your goal or not.  What can you do is get a book and write down your progress. You can use apps to help you as well.  However, I believe an old traditional book works best for me rather than apps. It helps me to focus with zero distraction.  Start with a question like the following;

  1. Am I on track?
  2. What did I do well today that allows me to achieve my goal?
  3. What did not I do well today that cause me to sidetrack from my goal?
  4. What can I learn from my shortcomings?
  5. How can I change that?

Here comes the power question,

  1. What are the rewards if I achieve my goal?
  2. What are the punishments if I did not achieve my goal?

Be very self-aware and be very honest with yourself. The best place to audit yourself is in front of your GOAL VISUAL BOARD. Ask yourself the questions above and make it a habit. You have to learn to face the painful truth rather than the beautiful lie.

Audit Yourself

Let us break it down.

VISIBLE > LIST > SHARE > WORD > AUDIT

Let’s do the work! See you at your finish line!

This is one of my favourite picture from The Spartan Race.  People often ask me, why do you race? My question to you why do you not race? The question “Why do you Race?” is a great metaphor of “Why do you live?”

File_000 (9)

I live to inspire people to embrace the adversity of life so that they can grow living life with fulfilment. That is why I Race. Let’s look at the two Spartans crossing the finish line right before the fire. One with a complete set of body, 2 arms and 2 legs. The other Spartan had 2 arms, 1 leg and crutches. Physically, they are different. However, both of them has the fire of a Spartan to beat all the life adversity.

The question is who has the most fire? At first glance, probably the one with crutches may have the most fire. However, I believe both of them has a different story to tell. One of them could be physically challenged which we can observe. One of them could be an emotional challenge which we cannot observe. At the end of the day, both of them has their own setback. But they cross the finish line! That is when it really counts! Here is the secret,  it is not about the setback. It is how you respond to your setback. All it takes is action! They make the decision to take action to break their setback. Instead of complaining about it and do nothing at all. They decide to take the positive attitude to matter how life hit them! That is the fire each of us needs to have!

The only disability in life is a bad attitude~ Scott Hamilton

My question to you my beloved readers, what are the setbacks you need to deal everyday? Have you found your fire? In other words, have your discover your why? How strong your fire to break the life obstacle? It is good to learn to embrace your fire, you will be impressed by how far you can achieve despite all the setback. That is how life roll! All it takes is action, then the fire will ignite!

The moment you write your goal on a piece of paper, you just only took the first step. For you to take the second steps and to continue until you reach your goals is by taking action. Execution is the key to success!

People love the feeling of being motivated, they don`t like to put in the work do something about the feeling. ~ Gary Vaynerchuk

Here are 3 key points you need to remember to make sure you execute! You just need to do it!!

1. Plan.Do.Check.Adjust.

You need to PLAN your big goal backward by breaking it down into smaller goals. Write or draw the map out the goal that you want to achieve, up to where you are today! Your big goal could be one year to five years’ time. Then, break it down into yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily. Write down a simplified to-do list daily, which can be done within your 24 hours in a day. Remember to keep track of it! DO the listed task everyday and make it a habit!

The fastest way to success is to replace bad habits with good habits. ~ Tom Ziglar

Every night before you go to bed, spend 10 minutes to CHECK where you are on the list. Ask yourself, “What did I do well?”, “What I did not do well?”, “What can I learn from my shortcomings?” and “How can I change that?”. Be honest with yourself when you are answering these questions. Self-Awareness is the KEY! You have to be flexible to ADJUST your daily tasks to achieve your goal. Then, you need to PLAN for the next day. The cycle continues with persistence until you reach your goal.  In a month, perform a major CHECK and ADJUSTMENT on where you are in your journey to achieve your goal.

2. Visualised the reward and the punishment.

Here is the story, imagine there is a 10 million dollar put in front of you. What you need to do is to run towards it. Once you grab that 10 million dollar, it is all yours and you will be super rich! Imagine you are in the jungle and a hungry lion is chasing to hunt and eat you. What you need to do is to run towards a building that keeps you safe and alive. Between these two stories, which do you think will run faster? I believe most of you will say the second story. You need to run for your life.

However, I think you will run faster if you see both! Let the lion chase you and put the 10 million dollars in front of you. You will run even faster! The reward is being wealthy with 10 million dollars and the punishment being dead. Here is the punchline, visualized the reward when you achieved your goal and visualized the punishment when you fail to achieve your goal.

Always start with questions. “What is the reward or benefit if I achieve my goal?” and “What is the punishment or the pain if I DON`T achieve my goal?” Visualised it for every goal that written down. Visualised the reward and visualised the punishment!

3. Get an accountability partner.

Human, as typical as it sounds, is made imperfect. We have that tendency to deviate from the desired goal over a period of time. When I was 12 years all, my parents were my accountability partner. They make sure I get good results in school. They tracked my academic performance. As we move into adulthood, your parents may not be there to keep track of what you are doing all the time. Hence, you need people around you to help you. Especially, those who are already successful!

An accountability partner takes on the role of trusted confident or a mentor whom you trust and who can provide you with the guidance and motivation to move forward. We need them in different areas of life. Some of them possess skills in certain areas in which you may need to achieve your goal.  They are your important resources whom you can trust, and who genuinely wants to help you. They are not afraid to say, “Why do you have that goal?”, “You`re doing the wrong thing because I did this before. This is what you should do?”, “How is your goal progress?”, “How do you feel about it?”, “You did great! Keep it up?” and they will help you to visualize the reward and the punishment,

Let’s recap, the first one is to Plan.Do.Check.Adjust. Secondly, visualised the reward the punishment. Visualized if you achieve your goal and visualized if you fail to achieve your goal. Most importantly, get a trusted accountability partner to help to in your journey. Wishing you all the best!  Remember, execution is the key!!

Ideas are worthless, execution is the game! ~ Gary Vaynerchuk

I wrote about  5 GREAT REASONS WHY WE NEED TO SET GOALS. You can either work to achieve your own goals or work to achieve the goals of someone else.  Remember this;

GOALS: Godly Objectives Assure Lasting Success by Zig Ziglar

Now, get a piece of paper and start writing down the following steps. Write in term of bullet points. If you want, just copy and paste this into Microsoft Word document and write it down!  Your first draft steps will not be perfect. Just start and record it down. Then, later look at it again and adjust to fit your lifestyle. Alright, here are the 7 easy steps to set your goals!

1. IDENTIFY YOUR GOAL

Decide exactly what you want! Most people never do this and fail. Why? They think they already have a goal. But what they have are not goals. They are only wishes, hope, and dreams. A real goal is crystal clear and very specific. For example, you want to lose weight! How much weight do you plan to lose? Do I want 6 packs? What is the waistline you are targeting? Again be very very clear!

Sample: To lose weight from 100kg to 80kg. Decrease waistline from 40inch to 34inch.

2. THE BENEFITS OF ACHIEVING THE GOAL

Imagine you are there grabbing your goal in your hand. What are the benefits you will gain? I am going to be happy. I am going to be healthier. I can spend time with my family. I will have more money. These are the rewards once you achieve your goal.  It acts as an anchor for you to work on your goal every day! Lets put it this way when you are struggling climbing a mountain, you just need to imagine the view at the top! That is the benefits once you achieve your goal! The most important thing is that your goal will make you fulfil and happy.

Sample: To be healthier. More energy. To look great and build confident of self-image. To live longer so that I can spend time with my children.

3. OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME TO ACHIEVE THE GOAL

Before you want to enjoy the view from the top of the mountain, you got to climb it. The mountains are the obstacles that you need to overcome to achieve your goal! Begin with questions. What are the obstacles that I need to overcome? What are the showstoppers? You need to list down all the obstacles that prevent you to achieve that goal!

Sample: Lack of discipline. Love sweet junk food. Unhealthy eating habit. Lazy to go to the gym. Not enough sleep within 8 hours.

4. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE NEEDED TO ACHIEVE THE GOAL

Skills and knowledge are required for you need to reach your goal. These are the tools you need to beat the obstacles that you list out in the previous step. Always start with questions. What do I need to do to beat this obstacle? How can I be better so that the obstacles can be knock down? Who I need to seek help from? One question will lead to another. For every answer, write it down. Don`t worry about whether it is correct or not.  It is just your first draft.  You can even google it! Just search “How to avoid sweet junk food?”

Sample: Prepare a diet plan and follow through. Throw away the sweet junk food in your home. Buy healthy organic food. Get the right workout plan to lose weight.

5. INDIVIDUAL, GROUPS, AND COMPANIES TO WORK WITH TO REACH THE GOAL!

Certain skills and knowledge you may not have to achieve your goal. Therefore, you need to get help. They can be your friends who are an already an expert in the field. They could be the people who you are inspired to reach. Lets us look case by case. You are struggling to get a healthy meal. You can google to find out whether there is a food outlet that can prepare a healthy meal for you or find out the recipe. Let’s just say you are to climb up a ladder in the corporate world.  It is a good strategy to have a mentor in the company to advise you on how to progress in the career world. Another key person that can help you is an accountability buddy. They are the one who will help to keep track on your progress. They need to be brutally honest and genuinely want to make sure you achieve your goal.

Sample: Healthy food outlet (Eg.FeedMe). Personal trainer. Fitness Website. Workout group. Marathon Event. Spartan Race. Accountability buddy, Alex.

6. PLAN OF ACTION AND EXECUTE!

“Innovation is rewarded. Execution is worshiped.” Dr. Eric Thomas

Make a list! Write down everything you can think of that you could do to achieve a goal. It has to be in a form of action statement. The very act of making a list of everything you can think of achieving your goal increases your belief that the goal is attainable. The organized your list into a plan.  Arrange your list in sequences. Create a checklist, a list of all the steps that you will have to take to achieve your goal. Be sure your list is practical and it can be done within 24 hours.

Take action on your plan and learn to adjust accordingly, You need to make effort to execute the plan. That is when your plan counts! It is only counted when it was executed.

Samples: I will commit to reducing the food portion in every meal especially high carb food.  I will not eat white bread, sweets, and junk food! I will workout in the gym 5 days a week. I will eat more fruits and drink more water in a day. I order food from a healthy food outlet since I do not have time to cook. I will hire a fitness trainer to coach me. I will commit to sleep 7 to 8 hours a day. I will run a marathon. I will join the SPARTAN RACE.

7. SET A DEADLINE AND KEEP TRACK!

A deadline acts as a forcing system for your subconscious mind.  This allows you to set a target. From the time you write down your goal and set a deadline, you will be motivated to work, adjust and take the necessary step to achieve it.  Keep track on your goal.  You can check your progress in term of weekly, monthly or even quarterly.

What happens if you don`t achieve your goal by the deadline? Then, you need to set another deadline. Remember, there is no unrealistic goals, merely unrealistic deadline. If you change your deadline more than 3 times. You may need to check your plan of action again. Your deadline may be unrealistic or you are not doing the work. Be honest with yourself.

Samples: (Assuming you start 1 January 2017) Weight from 100kg to 80kg by 31 December 2017. Each month, I need to lose 1.7kg of weight. If I did not achieve the monthly deadline. I need to adjust my workout program and my diet.

Every morning you wake up in the morning, read the steps! Every night before you sleep, read the steps again.  Ask yourself this question;

  1. What did I do today to achieve my goal?
  2. How can I improve for tomorrow?
  3. Why do I do this?

Finally, express gratitude. “I did well today”
